The Sea King's Daughter by Aaron Shepard

Genre: Folk Tale/Picture Book
Age range: 6-9
Summary: A poor musician is sought after by the sea king for his skill in playing such beautiful music. The king requests his services at their ball. Every time the sea people have a ball, they cause massive waves for sailors. The king appreciates the musician's playing so much that he insists the musician marry one of his daughters. She is a beautiful sea princess, and the musician feels he could not do better. The sea queen warns him, however. For if he embraces or kisses her then he will never be able to return home to his beloved city ever again. All the first night he does not embrace her. The sea princess questions this odd behavior and discovers that it is because he wants to return home. The musician awakes in his own house in his own hometown. He ends up marrying a fine young lady, raising a couple of kids, and living happily ever after even though he didn't live happily ever after with the princess from the sea. This story is proof that there is more than one person in this world that you can be happy with and that you don't have to give up the things you love in order to obtain them. Also, it is a tribute to patriotism. For the musician loved his hometown so much that it was worth more to him than even the most beautiful princess under the sea.
