Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery

Genre: Historical Fiction/Novel
Age Range: 7 and up
Summary: When Matthew and Marilla Cuthburt send for a boy from the orphanage to help on the farm, they are very surprised to see a talkative, red-headed little girl show up in his place. They intend to send her back, until Marilla meets the woman who will have use of her services to help with her six children. Marilla and Matthew, brother and sister, then undertake to raise Anne. Anne has never had a friend, never eaten ice cream and never attended school. Her life changes dramatically as she comes under the influence of these kind but undemonstrative people. But as they come to love and care for this young girl, Marilla and Matthew are changed as well. Anne becomes bosom friends with Diana Barry and her competition with Gilbert Blythe boosts her natural talents into real achievement. Her thoughtlessness gets her into trouble at times, as when she forgets to put the lid on the sauce for dessert and wakes up to find a mouse in it, then admits it just as Marilla begins to serve it to her guests. She excels at her studies and is singled out by her teacher, Miss Stacy, for extra sessions to prepare for the entrance exams to Queens College. She excels there too, and wins a scholarship to the University, but her dream of a university education is cut short when Matthew dies suddenly after a financial setback. Anne stays home to care for Marilla, and her war with Gilbert Blythe ends as Gilbert, who has been awarded a teaching position at the local school, takes a position further away, giving the local job to Anne. Anne’s adventures are funny and sweet, and the reader admires her attitude and determination despite her unfortunate childhood.
