The Magic Locket by Elizabeth Koda-Callan

Genre: Fiction/Picture Book
Age Range: 5-8
Summary: The Magic Locket is the story of a little red-headed girl who doesn’t seem to ever do anything right.  She is always spilling, stumbling, and breaking things.  One day after school, her Aunt Emma comes for a visit and tells the little girl that she was just like her when she was young.  While they are visiting, the little girl notices that Aunt Emma pours the tea and doesn’t spill a drop.  While her mother is out of the room, Aunt Emma gives the little girl a magic locket and tells her it will help her to do anything she wants to do – if she believes in it.  Each morning, the little girl puts on the locket and says, “I believe in you.”  She notices that things go better and she doesn’t spill, fall or break things any more.  Finally one day she opens the locket and discovers a mirror.  As she tells the mirror, “I believe in you,’ she realizes that she herself is the magic in the locket, and that it is believing in herself that has made the difference.
