The Great Gilly Hopkins by Katherine Paterson

Genre: Fiction/Novel
Age Range: 9-12
Summary: Gilly, an orphan child, has been passed around from foster home to foster home her entire life just waiting for her mother to rescue and take her to California. This bout of behavior went on until Gilly went to go live with the Trotters. Trotter wasn't like all of the other foster parents. She made Gilly do a lot of things herself and didn't concern Gilly with a lot of tedium about her hair and how she dressed. However, Gilly was a schemer. At first, Gilly hated it there. She even wrote her mother requesting that she be rescued, but she never heard back. She continuously tried to do things that would get her kicked out of Trotter's house for she felt that if she could get out of each house she would be that much closer to her mother. One scheme, she thought she would rob Trotter's blind neighbor. Unfortunately, he didn't have enough. So Gilly moved onto Trotter, herself. She took the money Trotter got from the state for being a foster parent. Gilly then headed to the train station for a one way ticket to California. But the ticket-seller would not sell her one and called the cops about the money which he figured had to be stolen. The cops showed up and took her down to the station where Trotter met up with her. She then took her back home and things got a lot better. Gilly started willingly help out. Part of that was because Gilly had to work off the money she stole from Trotter--even though Trotter got it back. One day, Gilly was busy taking care of everyone in the house including her blind neighbor when Gilly's grandmother showed up and saw her sloppy situation. Immediately, her grandmother rescued her from Trotters like Gilly had previously asked, but now, Gilly didn't need rescuing. She liked her life with Trotter, now. But she went with her grandmother anyway. Gilly finally learned how to care and love others.
