Summary: Russell Freedman does an excellent job at making Lincoln an actual person instead of just a statue. As President of the United States of America it is hard to see any of the human in a president, but by knowing that Lincoln answered the door in his pajamas or wore house slippers to work it sort of makes him seem more like you and me. It is interesting that Lincoln came from a shabby background but insisted on learning anyway. Although he had no more than a year of formal schooling, he studied many different things including the law. This is how he got interested in politics. It was also interesting to read about his struggles before he made it to the office of president. And how much older he looked at the end of his life then he did when he began being president. Overall, this book will really enlighten children because it will open their eyes that political and famous figures are people, too. And that they shouldn't see them as any better than they are.
